Biography
I was born and raised on the Island of Puerto Rico. I received a B.A. in Political Sciences in 2007 from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, and then a J.D. in 2010 from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico Law School. I moved to Gainesville, Florida, right after finishing my law degree to pursue an LL.M. in Comparative Law from the University of Florida Levin College of Law, which I completed in 2011. While at UFL, I received a Book Award for my research and contributions to the Selected Problems in Human Rights Course, became a researcher and Fellow of the UFL Institute for Human Rights, Peace, and Development, and thanks to my mentor’s nomination, I became a Junior Fellow – and now recently an Associate Fellow – of the World Academy of Art and Science. I moved to Maryland in 2012 to pursue a Ph.D. in the Communication, Culture, and Media Studies Program at Howard University in D.C. After successfully defending my doctoral dissertation, "An Analysis of Neocolonial Media Dynamics in the News About Puerto Rico," and receiving a pass with distinctions for both the dissertation document and the defense presentation, I completed my doctoral degree in 2016. I also completed a Certificate in International Studies and a Certificate in College and University Faculty Preparation. During my time at Howard University, I became a Researcher for the Howard Media Group, an Adjunct Lecturer in the undergraduate Strategic, Legal, and Management Communication Program, and a Faculty Professor in the Annenberg Honors Program. I currently teach in various higher education institutions. I am 40 years old, a happy wife, a loving mother of three wonderful boys, a college professor and a high school teacher, and the proud founder and CEO of a new nonprofit called Friendly Law, which aims to create a better relationship between society and the law. I also recently received an MD Governor's Appointment to the Hispanic Affairs Commission and to the Washington County Judicial Nominating Commission. My main passion lies within the field of human rights, and my general research interests are very diverse, including many areas such as, but not limited to, the process and interaction between law and communication, as well as issues related to diversity and equality, civil rights, public interest, public policy, culture, gender, and mass communications.
